Shark Eggcase Survey

Join SharkLab on a Shark Eggcase Hunt

Dive In

Winter is the season for Shark Eggcase Beach Surveys, from Oct to May every year tiny shark pups (no bigger than the palm of your hand) are hatching all around the Isle of Wight. Just like chickens some shark species lay eggs, the Isle of Wight is lucky to have 9 out of the 13 UK egglaying globally endangered shark species, each species lays a different shaped eggcase which allows us to ID them. Come along to a beach near you, or your favourite beach, and handle Shark Eggcases, learn how to identify them, spot their differences and find out why our sharks + skates are special and why they need protecting. We need help finding empty shark eggcases on the beach, each eggcase found is 1 shark pup swimming in the sea, by counting how many we find we can work out how healthy the IOW's shark population is. Additionally, we are organising monthly Shark Eggcase Surveys along the Bembridge/Sandown Marine Conservation Zone, this monthly surveys help us collect specific scientific data to add to our SharkLab Database and The Sharks Trust database. We have just started working alongside Bembridge Sustainability Group (which is run by Lindsey Newberry) to regularly survey Bembridge's Forelands Beach. If you are interested in the Monthly Eggcase Surveys just let me know and I'll add you to the email mailing list.
